So why do I have a passion for them? In movies I’ve seen how majestic and regal they look. I love horses as well but this story isn’t about them – It’s about unicorns.

What does a unicorn look like and what can they do?

The word unicorn means one horn even though you may think it meant tiny horn. Most unicorns are depicted as a white horse-like creature with a single horn growing from its forehead. The horn is also often marked with a spiral but is straight. Unicorns are sometimes mistaken for a deer or a goat that has one horn. Unicorns can be any colour from jet black, brown to snow white or gold.The eyes of a unicorn are mainly sky blue or purple.  The unicorn is thought to be able to divine the truth and will pierce the heart of a liar with its horn. A unicorn is said to be a sign of purity and grace. 

Fun facts about unicorns

Unicorns will live in groups of four to five that make up a happy family. The head of the family will be a elder unicorn hundreds of years old.

A unicorn family will be made up of two kids and a loving couple. A unicorn’s diet is mainly hay and grass but however they really don’t need to eat at all because they absorb most of their energy from the sun like a solar panel. A weird fact about unicorns that you may not know,  when a unicorn and a pegasus mate, the baby may become a flying unicorn, a baby unicorn is called a sparkle. Isn’t that a cute name?

Unicorn mythology facts

A very peculiar fact about unicorns is that in the 1700’s pharmacies in the U.K used unicorns horns as a remedy but for what is still unknown. Cups were believed to be made of unicorn horn but actually made of rhinoceros horn or narwhal tusk – were highly valued by important people in the Middle Ages as a protection against poisoned drinks. In European folklore, the unicorn is often depicted as a white horse-like or goat-like animal with a long horn and cloven hooves. According to Jewish legend, the unicorn can easily kill an elephant that’s at least twenty times  their weight!  

Now I will talk to you about the unicorn of the sea – the narwal. The narwal can also sometimes be called “the unicorn of the sea” or “unicorn whale.” It is a pale coloured porpoise found in Arctic coastal waters and rivers. Narwhals grow a long single horn on their forehead which is twisted just like a unicorn and is how it got its name – the unicorn whale. Narwhals use these horns to fight each other, the males will fight one another for a female. This can often end ugly. Narwhals are believed to feed by swimming towards the prey until its in striking range then sucking the prey into their mouth using an incredible force.

So, after hearing these unicorn facts you probably have your own opinion about this mysterious creature called a Unicorn. Whether Unicorns are real is up for you to decide.  Everytime  I see a rainbow, I still wonder are they real and out their watching us. Just because you haven’t seen one yet doesn’t mean they don’t exist!
